DonQ is the leading Rum producer in Puerto Rico. In its more than 150-year history, it has contributed to the development of the world of Rum and has influenced the world of mixed drinks. DonQ is the historic brand that for six generations the Serrallés family has produced at their distillery in Ponce, in the south of the Caribbean island. HISTORY The Serrallés Family moved from Spain to Puerto Rico in 1820. In 1861 Don Juan Serrallés, established a sugarcane plantation, Hacienda Mercedita, where in 1865 he produced his first cask of rum using a copper still imported from France, sold under the name Serrallés. In 1933 Prohibition ended in the United States, and in 1934 the Serrallès family started DonQ, inspired by the family's favorite book, Don Quixote. Just as Don Quixote represents the battle for a perfect world, DonQ embodies the Serrallès family's effort for rum perfection. Today DonQ and the distillery are led by the sixth generation of Serrallés, and Roberto, a doctor of environmental science, has applied his knowledge to transform the Serrallés distillery into the most eco-sustainable in the world. PUERTO RICAN RUM Puerto Rican Rum is an appellation of controlled origin that very few rums can boast. It is not enough to distill on the island but all Puerto Rican Rum must be aged for no less than 1 year in barrel and bottled without sugar.
