Barolo Ravera 2017 - G.D.Vajra
”The 2017 Barolo Ravera is gorgeous right out of the gate. Rose petal, sweet red berry fruit, lavender, spice and dried herbs are all finely delineated in a Barolo of tremendous presence. Orange peel, cinnamon and cedar develop later, adding shades of dimension. The 2017 is going to be fascinating to follow. Today, it is just breathtaking. That’s all there is to it.” A. Galloni, Vinous.
VINEYARDS AND TERROIR: La Ravera is located at the confluence of two different geological matrices. Over millions of years the layers have overlapped, creating a rather fragile soil subject to erosion, but with enormous potential. Prevalence of Marne di Sant’Agata Fossili, interspersed with sandy deposits rich in iron (Formations of Lequio). Average altitude: 360 m.s.l.m.
HARVEST AND VINIFICATION: The harvest was carried out on October 9th. Given the excellent balance of ripening, maceration lasted 45 days, of which 5 with submerged cap. Malolactic fermentation in steel in the following spring.
AGING: 30 months in 30hL Slavonian oak barrels before bottling.
TASTING NOTES: Brilliant ruby color. Graphite, ash, cherry and wild red berries. Rust and iodine in the background. The palate is distinguished by strength and energy. Long and tense, with crunchy tannin and small wild fruits.
FUN FACT: - In the 80s Milena and Aldo already cultivated some vineyards in the Ravera. Legend has it that Giuseppe was born after a walk to eat the Ravera cherries. - The first vintage produced of the new era is 2010. - It is currently the smallest Vajra di Barolo production of a single vineyard. - The Ravera vineyard opens to the south. Its amphitheater shape welcomes the sun's rays and the breezes in a complementary way to that of the Bricco delle Viole, which stands out like the bow of a ship: 100mt higher and 1 km further north.
