A rare opportunity for enthusiasts and collectors to savour the depth of this great Barolo over time.
Aldo Conterno's ancestors emigrated to Argentina in the 19th century and after a few years, due to family vicissitudes, returned to Italy. It was then that Giovanni Conterno returned with his family to Monforte d'Alba to his father Giuseppe's small winery, assisting him in the production of local wine. With his return, the Conterno winery increased the production of wine that was sold in casks not only in Italy but also in the distant Americas thanks to a relative still living in Argentina. The Conterno family thus felt the need to create, due to market demand, a great Barolo to be produced only in the best vintages, with long fermentations able to hold up over the years. In 1920, Barolo Riserva began to be bottled. At the end of the 1930s, Giovanni handed over the reins of the company to his son Giacomo who, continuing his father's tradition with great seriousness and far-sightedness, personally visited the clientele and, thanks to the prestige that Barolo was assuming, established his own brand in many areas of Italy. It was during these years that his sons Giovanni and Aldo began to flank him and follow him in running the business. In the mid-1950s, Aldo decided to leave for America with the dream of creating his own winery with the help of his uncle who was already living in California. The period spent in the United States was a constructive and unforgettable experience for him, which, however, he had to abandon due to the occurrence of certain situations and decided to return to Italy to his father's winery. When Giacomo passed the company on to his sons in 1961, the winery was by then a prestigious reality recognised throughout most of the country. In Aldo's heart, however, the five years spent on American soil left alive the desire to establish his own company. So it was that, after a long period working alongside his brother, Aldo decided to pursue that interrupted dream in America by purchasing the 'Favot' farmstead and founding 'Poderi Aldo Conterno' in 1969. Today the company is run by Aldo's three sons: Franco, Stefano and Giacomo who, following in their father's footsteps, carry on the family tradition.
