Domaine Grand Roche is a twenty-three hectare family business founded in 1987 by Erik Lavalée. The Domaine vinifies exclusively grapes grown in sustainable agriculture and coming from its own vineyards in the Saint Bris, Chablis and Côtes d'Auxerre appellations. The Côtes d'Auxerre is a region of Burgundy that develops south of the city of Auxerre, around the banks of the river Yonne. The first vineyards appeared in the 14th century and in 1321 the wines of Auxerre were served at the coronation of Charles VI. In 1787 the region boasted 1827 hectares of vineyards but after the philoxera only 200 were replanted. Little known today, the Côtes d'Auxerre produces white wines from Chardonnay grapes and red wines from Pinot Noir with an excellent quality/price ratio. The vineyards are located between 120 and 280 meters above sea level, mainly facing south-east and south-west. Among the productions of the Domaine there is also the Saint Bris, a semi-unknown appellation that develops around the village of Saint-Bris-Le-Vineux. The AOC dates back to 2003 and is the only appellation of Burgundy which provides for the use of Sauvignon (both Blanc and Gris) instead of the classic Chardonnay.
