Castellare di Castellina
CASTELLINA IN CHIANTI | TOSCANA - ITALIA
Poderi Castellare di Castellina is a company of about 80 ha. in the heart of the Chianti Classico, in Castellina in Chianti. The hectares of vineyards are about 33, located on the hills of a natural amphitheater, facing south-east.
The production is around 250,000 bottles of wine per year.
At an average altitude of 370 m. s.l.m. The vineyards are between 5 and 30 years old. In addition to the vineyards, there are around 12 ha. of olive groves and 15 ha. mixed cultivation. The rest is wood. Castellare di Castellina were born in 1968 from the merger of five farms. The yields per hectare in Castellare are very low, well below what is foreseen as a maximum by the disciplinary of the DOCG Chianti Classico. An excellent sun exposure, good water drainage, a mixed soil of limestone marl, galestro and little clay give wines, both red and white, very well structured, intense and suitable for long aging in the bottle.
The production in an average year is 130,000 bottles of Chianti Classico and (in the best years) of Chianti Classico Riserva; 50,000 government bottles, a red that recalls the Chianti traditions and its fruity and fresh characteristics; 35,000 bottles of Sodi di San Niccolò, the Tuscan wine based on native vines (Sangioveto and Malvasia Nera) with the highest absolute rating in the Wine Spectator rankings (96/100); and 15,000 bottles of white wines such as Le Ginestre, a blend of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc; like the Canonico, a 100% Chardonnay fermented in barriques and Spartito, a Sauvignon equally fermented in barriques. Finally, a few thousand bottles of Vin Santo and 4-5,000 bottles of Coniale, an extraordinary pure Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented in barriques (90 + by Robert Parker and 92/100 by Wine Spectator), and Poggio ai Merli, merlot in purity (92/100 from Wine Spectator).
