Citadelle gin is produced in Cognac, the birthplace of another well-known spirit. Using centuries-old wisdom handed down for five generations of master distillers, Alexandre Gabriel and the Pierre Ferrand winery have brought a complex, refined and elegant gin back to the market.

Citadelle is unique in the world thanks to its slow distillation method with the open flame that heats the small pot stills. It is not distilled all year round but only between March and November with a small Charentais alembic, one of those in use since the 1700s. This gin is in fact one of the few to use an open flame system, which fell into disuse after the invention of less dangerous methods. Producing this gin takes a long time, in fact the 19 botanicals are infused for 79 hours before distillation and the flame system takes a full day of work. Key ingredients include French juniper, violet, coriander from Morocco, almonds and sweet and sour lemon peel from Spain, Mexican orange peel, angelica from northern Germany, cardamom from India, cassia bark from Indochina, cinnamon from Sri Lanka, Chinese licorice, the spicy flavor of the grains of paradise from West Africa, Cubeb pepper from Java, Dutch cumin, French anise, nutmeg and fennel. Finally, the Italian iris root.
