Tamdhu. Name of Gaelic origin which means "small dark hill", it is a distillery founded in 1897 on the banks of the River Spey, and precisely in Knockando, a small town in central-eastern Scotland. Its relatively late date of birth allowed - as in the intentions of its founders - to take advantage of all the experience and technological development gained by other producers in the area, with the declared aim of building the most modern and efficient distillery that knowledge of the time could conceive. From the beginning, the intent was to produce the best malt whiskey possible and to be able to produce large volumes: this is because the Tamdhu distillate has historically become part of the composition of some of the most prestigious blends of Scotland, sold in hundreds of thousands of bottles all over the world. Beyond the use in blends, the attention to the quality of this distillery has nevertheless given life to an appreciated single malt, with a humble and frank philosophy more based on the pride of making an excellent whiskey rather than aiming for high-sounding references. and aggressive marketing. The result is that Tamdhu over the years has become a "niche" single malt, highly appreciated by connoisseurs even if little known by the general public. This being away from the spotlight despite the exceptional quality of the product unfortunately caused the distillery to be closed in 2010, only to be reopened two years later by an independent consortium. Today Tamdhu is once again on the crest of the wave, renewed in the design of its bottling, but always characterized by extreme attention to quality.
