LumiLuna, a young winery, was born in Mercatello (Perugia) under the sign of a great friendship, that between Luca Bigicchia and Giulio Rinaldi, two enterprising guys who have chosen to continue the family agricultural tradition and produce wine by restoring old vineyards to new vigor, thanks to targeted and accurate manual pruning and soil care. In 2015 Luca and Giulio, who like to call themselves "vineyard restorers" as well as winemakers, take over some rows and begin their adventure in the free hours and especially in the evening "by moonlight": hence the name of the winery. 2017 is the year of the turning point: from the production of a few hundred bottles, the two young people move on to an increasing production of hectoliters produced thanks to the acquisition of additional hectares of vineyards. In 2018 the owned cellar was also completed. The vineyards - trained with guyot, double overturned and spurred cordon - are located in a radius of 20 km south of Perugia, in the hills surrounding Mercatello, the locality where the winery is located. The oldest plants (up to 70 years of age) are mostly of Trebbiano, Malvasia di Candia and Grechetto. The younger vines are mainly Grechetto, Trebbiano and Sangiovese, but there are also small plots of Syrah, Merlot and Pinot Grigio. The vines rest on soils exposed differently and with extremely varied compositions ranging from clayey soils to those rich in skeleton, from clay mixed with limestone to marl. Luca and Giulio thus have at their disposal a range of extremely different grapes, in order to obtain fine and elegant wines without the use of synthetic substances. In addition to wines linked to the native Umbrian vines, the "lumilunici" interpret the fruit of each vintage by experimenting with unusual blends, different ideas and techniques. In fact, in September, unique wines come to life that change their characteristics and name every year: the latter will be given to them based on the songs that Luca and Giulio listened to the most during the harvest. Two bottle-fermented wines are also produced.
