Corton-Charlemagne owes its name to the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire Charlemagne, who owned it.
The vineyard is located in the upper part of the hill of Corton, in the Côte de Beaune, between the villages of Ladoix-Serrigny and Pernand-Vergelesses. Corton-Charlemagne is a Grand Cru appellation reserved exclusively for white wines produced from Chardonnay grapes. The lower part of the hill, also made up of Grand Cru vineyards, is instead reserved for the cultivation of Pinot Noir and produces the various Grand Cru Corton.
Corton-Charlemagne is the largest Grand Cru for white wines from Burgundy (it produces approximately double the Montrachet Grand Cru complex) and the Cru has different exposures: South, South-West and North-West. Wines produced with southern exposure are increasingly full-bodied and creamy while those from grapes exposed to south-west, as in this case, tend to be more austere and mineral.
