Castello di Neive

NEIVE | PIEDMONT - ITALY

The Stupino brothers - Anna, Giulio, Italo and Piera - are the owners of the Castle and about 60 hectares of land in Neive. They were all born in Neive as well as their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. The history of the company begins when their father, Giacomo, begins to take advantage of his experience as a surveyor and great connoisseur of the area and to acquire, where possible, land and vineyards in the best locations.

In the small cellars of the old Stupino house, the first production of wine for domestic consumption and for bulk sale begins. Messoirano, Montebertotto, Basarin, Valtorta, I Cortini: the number of farms and vineyards purchased by Giacomo grows and so does production. And so it was that in 1964 the castle was acquired with its spacious cellars and with the Santo Stefano and Marcorino farms, as well as other lands already owned by Count Guido Riccardi Candiani. This is the turning point that leads to organize the cellar, to restructure the vineyards left by the old owner, to produce wine with modern systems.

On the death of Giacomo in 1970, Giulio and Italo take care of the transformation from sharecropping to direct management of the assets, with the precious help of Talin Brunettini, a skilled cellarman and connoisseur of agronomic techniques. Then begins the first bottling and the introduction of the wines of Castello di Neive in the world. In 1978 another great milestone: thanks to the collaboration between Italo and some great personalities of the Turin Faculty of Agriculture - professors Italo Eynard and Annibale Gandini - the clonal selection plant begins on Arneis, an abandoned and almost unknown grape, of which rediscovered the Castle of Neive played a central role.

In recent years Italo has engaged directly and totally in the management of the company with the brand "Castello di Neive Azienda Agricola": a commitment that seems to follow a premonition that shines through from the old photo (antebellum!) In which the grandfather Mentore shows a bunch of grapes. The development of the markets, especially abroad, made it necessary to transform all the grapes of our vineyards. Although the spacious cellars of the castle were no longer able to allow this operation, we therefore decided, in the spring of 2012, to transfer the operations. production and therefore the machinery and stainless steel tanks in a new technical structure - Cellar 2 - with a rational lay-out, concentrating all the large and small wooden barrels for the aging of the wines in the cellars of the castle.

Barbaresco "Gallina" 2019 - Castello di Neive
"The 2019 Barbaresco Gallina is another enticing wine in this range from Castello di Neive. It shows the forward fruit that is typical of this site, but with the energy of a cooler year, a combination that works quite well. Sweet dried cherry, incense, orange peel, cinnamon and dried flowers lend aromatic presence to this translucent, super-expressive Barbaresco from Castello di Neive."...

Barbaresco "S.Stefano" 2017 - Castello di Neive
"The 2017 Barbaresco Albesani is a rich, heady wine that very much reflects the south radiance of the year. Super-ripe dark red cherry, red plum, mocha, leather and licorice flesh out nicely. The 2017 is ample, ripe and forward, with enough tannin and structure to develop nicely in bottle for a number of years to come. Like so many 2017 Barbarescos, it is a bit light, especially on the mid...
